Just got some additional coverage for my insurance. As an explainer, in Saskatchewan, your car, when it’s registered, is insured, but only the car, not the driver. So, for me to drive in another province , I had to get an additional plan . $200 deductible, $2 million liability, $1000 for a rental when I can’t use my car, and I’m covered on any car in North America . How much extra ?
$216 a year. So for this, base insurance, and vehicle registration, I pay about $1600 a year, or about half what I’d be paying if I still lived in Ontario. Although I may complain about the cold, I’m glad I live here.

That’s roughly what I pay for my 2008 Honda Fit. When switching from the Suzuki Aerio to the Fit, it caused my insurance to increase by about $25/month

Living in Toronto proper, I was quoted $3k a few years ago on anything I could afford. Maybe I could’ve gotten it cheaper, but I’m happy with this.
Plus, discounts are based on years without claims, and since I’ve only had my license here one year, I don’t get much of a discount.

Yea, but you cant put a price on world class food, amazing bars and countless hours stuck in traffic.
Oh, you can? nvm.

Saskatchewan: Canada’s Montana for LLCs (if you have your way).

... so I shouldn’t mention that you are paying more for insurance than I do on four cars with $0 deductible, max liability, and one of them is the 997.2? (Getting old has some advantages.)

You probably also have more driving experience than I do and live in America.

It baffles me how much car insurance varies from place to place. I know it all comes down to local laws, but still. You said you pay half of what you would in Ontario, while even your half is slightly more than I pay for my wife and I and 4 vehicles and a boat.

To be fair, I’ve probably been with my current insurer longer than most people here have been driving.

Wait a second... If you’re in Saskatchewan, why are you organizing an Oppo meet in the Toronto area?
And BTW... is that Oppo meet still on?

I’m heading back to Toronto (I was born and raised in Willowdale) for a vacation/seeing family for the first time in over a year. And yeah, the meet is still on. I’ll post an update tomorrow.

I have to ask, why a $200 deductible?
I see soo many people with $500-1500 deductibles who end up totaling their car then not being able to afford to pay the deductible and get another car it’s mind boggling. Why no go for a 100/0?
You’re only paying what I pay for full coverage 100/0 deductible on 2 vehicles and homeowners....

I do a $300 deductible for comprehensive, $500 for collision, and $0 for glass. Looked like the sweet spot to me, and keeps the premiums down, and I can definitely afford to pay it.
With my health insurance I do prefer a low deductible plan because my costs are quite high, and I’d rather not pump $6000 into a deductible right away. My Obamacare plan was $0 deductible, but the best my company is offering is $1500.

M y wife and I have similar coverage on our vehicles and pay about $900 incl taxes per vehicle , and I feel ripped off every year when I have to pay those bills. Stupid big city living!
I guess being old(-ish) has one advantage...

Oh my god, I just made a similar reply. Is this what being old feels like?
Get off my lawn, yelling at clouds, etc etc

... paying $600 a year to insure a sports car that you could trade straight up for a pretty nice house if you don’t mind living a bit out of town?

If you can afford to pay the deductible, that’s great.
Sadly too many people go with shit insurance because they have themselves stretched so thin they can’t afford an extra $5/month for good coverage. So instead of buying a slightly cheaper vehicle and putting good insurance on it, they buy the most expensive thing they can “afford” then skimp on insurance, leading to being financially screwed when something does happen.
We won’t even talk about healthcare as ours has been a steady landslide of shit since Obamacare and the ACA went into effect. We had great insurance cheap prior, now we’re stuck overpaying for obnoxious deductibles.

Yeah, obviously you need to pick a deductible you can afford to pay.
Not to go too far down the health care path, but health care costs have been increasing much faster than inflation going back at least to the Clinton administration. The rate of growth actually slowed under Obamacare (though it did, and continues to, increase). What changed under Obamacare is that in general employers who had previously eaten the healthcare cost increases buy paying more had a convenient excuse to subsidize a smaller portion of health insurance costs and pass the rest onto their employees.

Sadly the obvious isn’t so obvious to the majority of vehicle owners..
